CS2 trade cooldown: what it is and how to remove it
A trade cooldown does not lock your account: the item stays in your inventory and works in game, you just cannot pass it on until a certain date. The confusion comes from the word itself — it covers CS2 Trade Protection, the seven-day restriction after a purchase, Steam trade holds of up to 15 days, account restrictions after a password reset and permanent trade bans. This guide lists every duration straight from Steam Support and Valve patch notes, shows where the exact unlock date lives, and explains what you can actually do about it and what no amount of money will change.

In short: what a trade cooldown is and when it ends
- A cooldown limits trading, not your account. The item stays with you, you can play with it, you simply cannot pass it on.
- Received an item in a trade — 7 days. Since July 2025 every CS2 item arrives Trade Protected: it cannot be traded, sold, opened, modified or stored.
- Bought on the Market or in game — 7 days as well. The rule landed with the Armory update on 2 October 2024 and covers the in-game store, the Armory and the Community Market.
- No Mobile Authenticator — up to 15 days. That is a Steam trade hold. It no longer applies to CS2 items, while account-level restrictions apply to every game.
- Nothing can be shortened. Steam Support states plainly that it cannot modify trading or Community Market restrictions, regardless of the circumstances.
What people call a trade cooldown
One phrase covers five different mechanics with different durations and different causes. Until you know which one fired, looking for a way to remove it is pointless: each has its own timer and its own way of being avoided.
- CS2 Trade Protection — 7 days on an item received in a trade. The trade itself goes through instantly.
- Purchase cooldown — 7 days on an item bought in game, in the Armory or on the Community Market.
- Steam trade hold — up to 15 days of delayed delivery when the account is not protected by a Mobile Authenticator.
- Account restrictions — 2 to 30 days without trading or the Market after a password reset, a new device, a removed authenticator and similar events.
- Trade bans — VAC, game bans or scam bans. Not a cooldown at all: the term can be permanent and it cannot be lifted.
CS2 Trade Protection: 7 days on everything received in a trade
On 15 July 2025, alongside Premier Season Three, Valve switched on Trade Protection. The official Counter-Strike announcement puts it simply: if you lose control of your account or get scammed, you may reverse all Counter-Strike item trades from the last 7 days. The feature replaced the old delays — items now arrive instantly but stay protected for a week.
What protected means is spelled out in the Steam Support article Trade Protected Items: for 7 days the item cannot be consumed, modified or transferred, including being moved to a Storage Unit. You can equip it and play with it right away.
- No trading, no Market listing. The item stays on the account until the week is over.
- Nothing can be consumed. A case will not open, a capsule will not unseal, the item cannot go into a trade-up contract.
- Nothing can be modified. Stickers, charms, patches, name tags and the StatTrak Swap Tool are all off the table.
- No Storage Units. Moving an item into storage counts as a transfer.
- No opting out. Protection applies to every CS2 item and cannot be disabled, and protected items cannot be mixed with items from games without protection in one trade.
There is a bonus in the same article: CS2 items are no longer subject to trade holds or trade escrow and move between accounts immediately, regardless of how well the account is protected. For CS2, the 15-day delivery delay is gone, replaced by the 7 days of protection.
Bought on the Market or in game — the same 7 days
The second most common cooldown comes from a purchase rather than a trade. The CS2 patch notes of 2 October 2024, the Armory update, state it outright: all items acquired from the in-game store including the Armory, from trade offers and from the Steam Community Market are subject to a 7 day re-trade and re-market restriction.
For the store and the Market this is old news — Valve introduced the same seven-day cooldown back in March 2018, explaining on the Counter-Strike blog that it targets automated services that pass items around dozens of times a day. For a regular player it barely matters: items between real people rarely move more than once a week anyway.
A separate case: items that never become tradable after purchase. Since the update of 12 November 2025, newly purchased Name Tags and StatTrak™ Swap Tools can no longer be traded or listed on the Community Market at all. That is not a cooldown — there is nothing to wait for.
Steam trade holds: up to 15 days without the Mobile Authenticator
A trade hold belongs to Steam, not to CS2. The article Steam Trade and Market Holds describes it this way: if your account has not been protected by a Mobile Authenticator for at least the last 7 days, items leaving the account are held by Steam for up to 15 days. Both sides confirmed the trade, but Steam keeps the item so that the owner has time to spot activity they did not authorise.
- The authenticator removes holds, but not instantly. Only trades and listings created more than 7 days after it was added skip the hold.
- Existing holds are not shortened. The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator article says it plainly: adding an authenticator will not reduce the length of existing item holds.
- Cancelling a held trade costs 7 days. Steam assumes you intercepted a hijacker and closes trading for a week. Steam Support cannot remove that cooldown.
- CS2 items no longer get holds. Trade Protection replaced them — but the account restrictions below still apply to every game, CS2 included.
Account restrictions: when Steam closes trading entirely
This is the annoying group: the item is innocent, the restriction sits on the account and closes both trading and the Community Market. The durations come from the Steam Support article Trading and Market Restrictions and the Mobile Authenticator article.
| What happened | How long | What is blocked |
|---|---|---|
| Item received in a trade | 7 days | trading, selling, opening, modifying, storage |
| Item bought in game, in the Armory or on the Market | 7 days | re-trading and re-listing |
| Reversing trades through Trade Protection | 30 days | trading and the Market — only for whoever reversed |
| Trade without a Mobile Authenticator | up to 15 days | item delivery; does not apply to CS2 items |
| Cancelling your own trade that sat in a hold | 7 days | trading |
| Password reset | 5 days | trading and the Market |
| Password reset on an account idle for over two months | 30 days | trading and the Market |
| Signing in from a new device or browser | 7 days | trading and the Market from that device |
| Mobile Authenticator removed | 15 days | trading and the Market |
| Authenticator moved to a new phone | 2 days | trading and the Market |
| Steam Guard enabled recently | 15 days | the Market; trading too until Guard has been on for 15 days |
| New payment method, card not verified | 3 days | Market purchases |
| No purchase older than 7 days and younger than a year | until you buy | the Community Market entirely |
Calculator: when the cooldown ends
Steam counts from the exact moment of the event, so the unlock happens at the same time of day as the trade or purchase. The precise date is always written in the item description in your Steam inventory.
Where to find the exact date
- 1 Open your Steam inventory
An item on cooldown stays where it was and looks the same. Only the description changes.
- 2 Hover the item
Steam shows the date before which the item cannot be traded or sold. It is the only source worth trusting, because Steam counts from the exact moment of the trade or purchase.
- 3 Look for the protection shield
Items received in trades are marked with their own icon in the inventory and in the trading interface — that is how Trade Protection is told apart from an ordinary purchase cooldown.
- 4 Check your trade history
The Steam trade history page lists recent trades and is where a reversal starts if items left without your knowledge.
- 5 If the whole account is blocked, read the error
When it is the account rather than the item, Steam names the reason in the trade window or on the Market — match it against the table above.
What can actually be removed
The short answer: nothing. Trading and Market Restrictions carries it as a highlighted notice — Steam Support cannot modify trading or Community Market restrictions, regardless of the circumstances under which the account became restricted. The 30 days after a reversal and the 7 days after cancelling a held trade are called out separately as unremovable too.
All an owner can do is wait and not make it worse. Three things genuinely help, and none of them shortens a running cooldown.
- Add the Mobile Authenticator — it removes future holds and the new-device restriction. It does nothing for timers already running.
- Leave security settings alone while a cooldown runs: removing the authenticator adds 15 days, a password reset adds 5, and 30 on a dormant account.
- Move the authenticator instead of removing it when changing phones: a transfer costs 2 days, removal costs 15.
Paid cooldown removal is always a scam
Since not even Steam Support can lift a restriction, anyone offering to remove one for money, for a deposit or through a friend is lying. The schemes repeat year after year and end the same way: the victim loses the money, the account, or both.
- A cooldown-removal site with a Steam login. Phishing: the form harvests the login, the password and the authenticator code, and the account is gone.
- A bot that will move the item to a clean account. Technically impossible — a protected item cannot be transferred to anyone, bots included.
- My friend works at Valve. Support does not modify trading restrictions under any circumstances, and Valve employees do not message you asking for codes.
- A request for an SMS code or a trade confirmation. Steam explicitly says never to give such codes to anyone: they add and remove authenticators. Steam Support never asks for codes.
- Pay a verification deposit. After the payment comes a fee, then insurance, then the block.
- Forward the confirmation email. Steam warns about this one by name: forwarding the message or the link means confirming their trade with your own hands.
When it is a ban, not a cooldown
If trading is closed with no end date, it is not a cooldown. Five cases get confused with one most often.
- VAC or game ban. Steam Support states that an account with a VAC ban loses access to the CS2 store, cannot trade CS2 items and stops receiving item drops. Steam Support cannot remove a VAC ban.
- Scam-related trade ban. Issued manually, temporary or permanent. After a temporary one the account is placed in trade probation, visible to other users even though trading works again.
- Limited account. Without a qualifying purchase there is no trading and no Market: access needs a successful purchase older than 7 days and younger than a year.
- Community ban. Issued for breaking Steam Community rules — spam, phishing, account selling, abusive content. It closes trading, the Market, friends, chat and comments for anything from days to forever. The profile shows a red "Community Banned" label. Only Steam Support can lift it, and it rarely does.
- Game ban. Applied manually by the game developer, for example after a cheating review. For CS2 it works like VAC: the game inventory is locked, drops stop and the profile shows a red "Game ban" line.
| What you see | What it is | Duration | How to lift |
|---|---|---|---|
| A shield and a date in the item tooltip | Trade protection (cooldown) | Up to 7 days | Wait, it ends on its own |
| "Items will be held until…" when sending a trade | Steam trade hold | Up to 15 days | Cancel the trade; enable the Mobile Authenticator for the future |
| A trade error with a specific date | Account-level cooldown | 7–15 days | Wait, it ends on its own |
| A red "Trade Banned" label on the profile | Trade ban | Fixed term or permanent | Steam Support only |
| A red "Community Banned" label | Community ban | Fixed term or permanent | Steam Support only |
| A red "VAC ban" or "Game ban" line | VAC / game ban | Permanent | Cannot be lifted |
How to avoid cooldowns
- 1 Add the Mobile Authenticator well in advance
Not before the deal — at least a week before. Trades created during the first 7 days after it is added still go into a hold of up to 15 days.
- 2 Do not reset your password before a deal
Changing the password in client settings costs nothing, but a reset through account recovery costs 5 days, or 30 on a dormant account.
- 3 Buy items with time to spare
Anything bought in game or on the Market cannot be resold for a week. If it has to arrive by a date, buy it at least 7 days ahead.
- 4 Trade from your usual device
A new browser, cleared cookies or a fresh install closes trading for 7 days — unless the authenticator has been active for longer than a week.
- 5 Moving to a new phone? Transfer, do not remove
A transfer costs 2 days of restrictions, removing and re-adding costs 15.
- 6 Plan trade chains
An item received in a trade cannot move on for a week. Buy-and-flip-tomorrow does not work in CS2 — keep it in mind when building crafts or trade-up contracts.
While the clock runs, maths beats waiting: the checker shows how much of a budget survives opening any case.

| Cooldowns can be bought off | No. Steam Support does not modify trading restrictions under any circumstances, so nobody outside can either. |
| Support will help if you ask nicely | No. The article highlights it as a notice: the circumstances make no difference. |
| The authenticator clears a running hold | No. It removes future holds but never shortens existing ones. |

| Reversing trades is free | It costs 30 days without trading or the Market for whoever starts it. |
| Valve returns stolen items | No. Steam does not restore items that have left an account, for any reason. |
よくある質問
What is a trade cooldown in CS2?
A limit on moving an item. It stays in your inventory and works in game, but until a certain date it cannot be traded, sold, opened or modified. The cause can be a trade, a purchase, a Steam trade hold or an account-wide restriction.
How long is the cooldown after a trade?
7 days. Since July 2025 every CS2 item received in a trade is Trade Protected: it cannot be passed on, consumed, modified or moved into storage until the week is over.
How long is the cooldown after buying on the Community Market?
Also 7 days. The CS2 patch notes of 2 October 2024 state that items from the in-game store, the Armory and the Steam Community Market get a 7 day re-trade and re-market restriction.
Can a trade cooldown be removed early?
No. Steam Support states directly that it cannot modify trading or Community Market restrictions under any circumstances. No payment, bot or contact changes that.
Why is my trade held for 15 days?
That is a Steam trade hold: the account has not been protected by a Mobile Authenticator for the last 7 days, so items are held for up to 15 days. CS2 items no longer get holds — Trade Protection replaced them.
Where can I see when the cooldown ends?
In the Steam inventory: the item description carries the date before which trading and selling are unavailable. For account restrictions, Steam shows the reason and the term in the trade window or on the Market.
What happens if I reverse my trades?
Every trade with protected items from the last 7 days is rolled back, Market listings return, pending offers are cancelled, and the account gets 30 days without trading or the Market. Trade partners are not restricted.
How long after a password reset?
5 days if the account has been in use. If there was no activity for more than two months, the restriction lasts 30 days. Changing the password in client settings carries no restriction.
