Steam balance rate
You buy an item on a marketplace and list it in Steam. The buyer price is about 1.15 times the amount credited to you as the seller.
You buy an item in Steam and sell it on a marketplace. The estimate uses listings corroborated by nearby prices on other markets and includes the selling fee and the known maximum withdrawal fee.
The estimate uses current asking prices, not completed trades. Prices may change during the hold, so the actual payout may be lower.
Steam quotes arrive in batches. Estimates will appear after enough fresh data has been collected — check back a little later.
How it works
Top up the Steam wallet
- 1 Pick an item from the top-up table It lists items whose marketplace price is closest to what they sell for in Steam. Cases are the easiest: thousands of them change hands every day.
- 2 Buy it on a marketplace with real money Card, bank transfer or crypto, depending on the marketplace. The item arrives as a trade into your Steam inventory, which usually takes from a minute to a couple of hours.
- 3 List it in Steam and get the balance After a trade the item cannot be sold for 7 days — that is the Valve hold. Then list it on the Community Market: the buyer price should be about 1.15 times the amount you want credited to your balance.
Cash out of Steam
- 1 Pick an item from the cash-out table The table uses asking prices corroborated by nearby prices on other markets. The displayed payout remains an estimate after the selling fee and the known maximum withdrawal fee.
- 2 Buy it in Steam with balance A Community Market purchase is paid from the Steam wallet. The item you bought is also locked for 7 days, so you cannot resell it right away.
- 3 Sell it on a marketplace and withdraw List the item on the selected marketplace. The estimate deducts the selling fee and the known maximum withdrawal fee, but price changes may make the actual payout lower.
Fees and pitfalls
The 7-day hold
Anything received in a trade or bought on the Community Market cannot be traded or sold for a week. The rate can drift a long way in that time — this is the main risk of the whole scheme.
Trade bans and Steam Guard
Trading is blocked if the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator has been active for less than 7 days, and after a password change. An account that has never spent $5 cannot trade at all.
The Steam fee is 15%
Steam adds a 5% Steam fee and a 10% game fee to the seller amount, with a one-cent minimum for each. For the seller to receive about $10, the buyer pays about $11.50; the proceeds remain Steam balance.
The rate depends on the queue
The numbers are based on the cheapest listing. If hundreds of identical listings sit ahead of yours in Steam, the sale drags on for days and the price has to come down — watch the sales-per-day column.
Currency conversion
All prices are originally in dollars. A marketplace converts at its own rate and a bank adds its own cut, so the final local-currency figure is usually 1–3% off ours.
FAQ
Why is the rate not 1 to 1?
Steam balance cannot be exchanged directly for cash, item prices differ between Steam and outside marketplaces, and fees plus the trade hold add losses and price risk. The rate therefore varies and is not 1 to 1.
Which items work best?
Cases and cheap popular skins: Steam moves thousands of them a day, so a listing sells fast and at a predictable price. Rare knives look better on paper but a listing can sit for weeks.
Is this safe?
The risk is not in the scheme but in the counterparty: we calculate the rate, we do not sell items or run trades. Stick to marketplaces with a long track record, never follow trade links from chats, and check that the trade really comes from the marketplace.
How often is the rate updated?
Market prices every half hour, Steam quotes in batches every 15 minutes, with each item re-checked once every few hours. The time of the last calculation is shown under the heading.
